ASTCO Ltd. announces ASTUTE/UNIX Support Option in traditional OS/390 format

New Product Announcement

December 1998 -- Advanced Software Technologies Co., Ltd. (ASTCO Ltd.) announces the availability of the ASTUTE/UNIX™ Support Option.  Available as a separate product or as an integrated component of ASTCO Ltd.'s flagship product, ASTUTE®, the UNIX Support Option eases the implementation and maintenance of UNIX Support Services by providing UNIX file and HFS management facilities in a format with which the traditional OS/390® user is familiar.

Running as a batch job, started task, or from a TSO or ISPF session, the ASTUTE/UNIX Support Option provides two areas of functionality and benefit:

UNIX File Management - ASTUTE/UNIX may be directed to scan all or part of the file system hierarchy, select files or directories based on any criterion or combination of criteria, and produce reports detailing any desired information about the selected items.   These customizable reports may be sorted by any item (or items), in ascending or descending order.  Subtotalling facilities may be applied to summarize information, and preprocessing and string-generation facilities may be employed to easily generate data or commands to process files or directories, enabling, for example, a UNIX file-usage chargeback system to be easily set up.

HFS Management - ASTUTE/UNIX may be directed to interrogate all mounted HFS data sets, select HFSs based on any criterion or combination of criteria (including allocation, UNIX file utilization, OS/390 attributes such as tracks allocated, etc.) and produce reports detailing any desired information about the selected HFS data sets.  Subtotalling may be used to produce aggregate usage reports, and preprocessing and string-generation may be employed to specify actions to be taken, for example, when an HFS percentage-used value passes a predetermined or calculated threshhold.  This entire process may be automated using ASTUTE/TRACKER's scheduler, history file, and trend-graphing support, to track HFS usage over time, avoiding any problems that might arise when HFS data sets get too full (ASTUTE/TRACKER is a component of the ASTUTE system).

Implementers of UNIX Support Services will benefit greatly from ASTUTE/UNIX, through the ability to easily gather and process information about UNIX files and directories, and through the ability to easily gather and process information about HFS data set utilization.

With ASTUTE/UNIX, those used to OS/390 data set processing and reporting methods can easily and quickly adapt to UNIX Support Services files and directories.
